Characteristics of the Dörfler student cello bow
The stick of this bow is not made of the famous Pernambuco, but of woods called “Brazilwood”. Unlike what their name suggests, these species do not come from Brazil. However, they are still very close to Pernambuco. As such, the wooden student bows I offer have very similar technique characteristics to that of the sought-after Pernambuco, even if their colour and texture are different.
However, the stiffness and responsiveness of such sticks are not necessarily not as good as that of a Pernambuco stick. While they do not display the nice colour of the actual Brazilwood, they are more affordable.
They have quite a nice finish. Their ebony frog is mounted with an abalone lining and wounding. As for the metal parts, such as the ferule, the button and the wrapping, they are made of nickel silver, an alloy of nickel, copper, and zinc. If you look closely, you may notice that the stick is labelled Werner. This is the label Dörfler uses to identify the most affordable of their instruments.
Besides, the sticks are available in many sizes, even for the smallest cellists!
The violin maker’s hindsight on Dörfler student cello bow
For a student bow, this model has the advantage of being well-made. The materials are simple, with no embellishment, they get down to basics. That’s why they are affordable and have great quality for a reasonable price. Not to mention that I choose these sticks personally and only keep the best.
Besides, they are available in every size.
