Characteristics of a Passion-Tradition Mirecourt baroque violin

Mirecourt is the home of French instrument manufacture. For centuries, this small town in the Vosges has gained world-wide recognition for its violin-making.

First and foremost, a baroque cello from the Mirecourt series is a great tool to study early music. You can learn on a perfectly suited instrument with an actual baroque setup – archings, neck, fingerboard, and an overall manufacture very similar to what the musicians used to play with in the baroque era.

The tonewoods used are mostly maple and spruce, but somes fittings are of ebony. The fingerboard and the tailpiece are also of maple and the pegs are of jujube.

As for the bridge, it is carved after original copies from the baroque period. The cello is fitted with actual gut strings.

What is Passion-Tradition?

Passion-Tradition is the label of the instruments made in the Guan Kaiming workshops, in Beijing. For the last 15 years, these instruments have been imported in France and Europe, and praised both by amateurs and professionals.

These bowed string instruments are entirely handmade by the 11 violin-makers of Guan Kaiming. They offer a wide variety of instruments, for all levels from to beginner to soloist. It’s amazing how their production is both diverse and of high-quality, be it for the modern instruments or the baroque ones.
