Wittner Hill-style fine tuners – Gold
Located in Germany, Wittner makes about every accessory related to the violin family. In other terms, this is a steady, reliable, and precise business.
Hill style fine tuners have three parts:
- First, the base has a string retainer, a hook to which the loop-end string is hung.
- Then, a nut fastens the base to the tailpiece.
- Finally, a screw applies pressure on the string retainer, thus tightening or untightening the string.
They can be used both on violins and violas. Moreover its black and gold finish looks dashing on the most flamboyant instrument.
A few advices
First and foremost, keep in mind that these tuners are made for loop-ends, not ball-ends. Unlike what I have seen some musicians do, fastening the ball onto the retainer is pretty dangerous, since it could break at any time.
Besides, a loop protector can be useful to preserve your string.
This tuner is only meant for E strings, that is to say the highest string on your instrument. Indeed, low strings are never ball-end strings.
How to install a Wittner Hill-style fine tuner
To install a tuner, start by removing the previous one.
First, loosen the screw, then the nut. After that, the base of the tuner has to go through the E-string notch of your tailpiece. Then tighten the nut with your fingers or tweezers. Should you use this tiny tool, please first wrap it inside a piece of fabric or leather so as not to damage the nut. Finally, place the screw so that it applies pressure on the string retainer.
